I find it very hard to answer that question, even, or especially after reading the book. The book starts with some men on a boat and proceeds with one of those men telling the others of his voyage into the heart of Africa. The rest of the book then consists out of this retelling. The story shows many encounters between the white and black men in a time when the blacks were treated shockingly and horridly. MY OPINION ON THE BOOK It was very hard for me to get into the story because it is written in a very unclear and vague way. The storytelling does never stick to any real plot but breaks too often out of the actual story to tell some more. That "more" loses itself and therefore also the reader in an awful lot of words. This very short short story is told by a female narrator who is stuck in a room with an awful yellow wallpaper, much like the one you can see on the cover. Throughout this story she analysis and interprets a lot into this wallpaper. Since she feels not well, her husband orders her to rest in this room, which slowly drives her mad. MY OPINION ON THE BOOK I was quite surprised by how short this story actually is. In this edition it is only 35 pages long and reads itself even quicker because of the few sentences that are actually placed on one page. You can definitely read through it in about 15 minutes. MY THOUGHTS ON IT I found it most of the time quite difficult to read this short story. It felt like reading way too much unnecessary information that took away quite some pages amongst the very few that there are. Since the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is very popular, I already knew the twist of the story. Therefore the book took way too long for me to get to its actual point. I adored this pun at the beginning of the book: I just found it very funny that such a "lame" joke could be found in such an old and classic novel. This is why All The Bright Places reminded me very much of Holding Up The Universe; it was extremely obvious from the structure and writing style, that these two books were written by the same author. The books have many similarities like the constant change between the male and the female protagonists' point of views. The protagonists in both books also share a tragic backstory and/or mental illness, with which the reader of the book gets confronted very quickly.
